Running Journal 1/29/2020 – 2/3/2020

1/29/2020 – Wednesday. I went out to the Silver Comet Trail today to complete my 5 mile run. I had an intention of running while fasting, but I didn’t leave first thing in the morning so I had 2 scrambled eggs with Swiss cheese and coffee before I left. I was a little nervous about running on the trail as the last time I went out there, I sprained my ankle. I decided to face all my fears about hurting myself and even wore the same shoes. Happily, I didn’t hurt myself. The run was a little slow today though. I think the likely culprit is the enormous amount of pizza I had last night. After 3 miles, I felt better though. I did notice that when I was wanting to stop and walk that my heart rate was about 175 or more. I would stop just long enough to bring it back down to 160 and try to keep it around 165. I think that is my sweet spot. I can’t wait to get my books about training and to start learning about coaching. I honestly feel like it is going to help my own running. I didn’t weigh myself this morning. The scale’s batteries were dead.

 – Goal for tomorrow – Wake up early for my 3 mile run before work. Try to learn about increasing speed. How do I need to train? Continue to count all calories. Put batteries in the scale and weigh myself first thing in the morning. My dry weight! Journal after my run.

1/30/2020 – Thursday. I woke up early but only after hitting the snooze button several times. My scale must be lying to me because I haven’t lost ANYTHING for a couple weeks. Of course I had my coffee before running. I decided after looking at my average run time that I want to improve and I want to lose weight. I decided that I would do speed drills this morning. I did them but only for a mile! They killed me. This means that I have to get on the treadmill after work for a couple of hours.

1/31/2020 – Friday. I didn’t do the 2 miles yesterday as I was supposed to. I left work a little late and was exhausted. It is amazing to me how much a stressful day in the ICU mentally can take out of you by the time you get home. I intended to wake up early and run this morning. I did wake up early but as soon as I opened the door to let the dogs outside, I couldn’t breathe. It had rained over night and there had to be a ton of mold spores in the air. There was no way I could run like that. I laid on the couch feeling miserable until it was time for me to get ready for work. I did walk at work for almost 1.5 miles on the treadmill though. I also weighed myself yesterday…

 – Goal for tomorrow – Wake up at 6:30 and get my long run completed before work. 8 mile run. I’m going to try to run it at a slower rate and watch my heart rate while I’m doing it. I have done some reading already about heart rate monitoring for endurance sports and think I’m going to give it a shot. Finish up the post I am writing about the day before the race, and post it tomorrow sometime.

2/1/2020 – Saturday. I woke up early and then fell asleep for about 45 more minutes. I was really upset with myself. I still went downstairs and had my cup of coffee then got on the treadmill. I decided that I would try to utilize what I am learning in my coaching program and tried to do a run with my heart rate in the 65 – 75% range. I haven’t gotten my MHR on a track yet so I estimated that to be between 131-151. That is a very slow HR for me so I feel like maybe I’m not in very good shape and I need to work harder. I did this for 4 miles and had to stop and get ready for work. After work, I got on the treadmill and ran almost 4 miles again at a low speed. I had to slow even further this time because my muscles were tired from my morning run and then 10 hour work day.

 – Goal for tomorrow – Rest day. Super Bowl Sunday. Enjoy the day. Give legs a rest.

2/2/2020 – Sunday. I got up and weighed myself. It must have been all the salt I had last night that added some weight to me this morning… I went with Brett for a short time to the tennis court and learned how to serve the ball. I’m pretty proud of how that went. My shoulder is worn out though. I was able to use my legs a little but I feel like they got some rest. My resting HR this morning was 54. I’m going to have to find a way to log that in my running log on days off…

 – Goal for tomorrow – 3 miles according to my schedule. Perhaps I will run the three and then try to find my MHR after I’m done on my treadmill or out at Swift. Weigh myself in the morning. Go to the tennis court and practice some serves!

2/3/2020 – Monday. I had a busy day off today which I filled with maintenance things. I didn’t end up running because Brett came home early to go to the tennis court with me and practice some tennis. I decided that I would switch today and tomorrow’s schedule and use tennis as my cross training day. We had fun though I think maybe he more than me as he was laughing at my clumsiness. I’m getting better at serving though!

 – Goal for tomorrow – 3 mile run before work. I have to get up at 6:45 in order to leave early to get to Marietta before work. Continue to study for my training certification. I got my manual in the mail today but have only been able to read a couple pages. I can’t wait to become a coach!

Reflections and goals for upcoming week. I think that journaling is helping my accountability. I’m going to continue to journal daily my running/exercising. I didn’t add my weight but think I should continue to track it. I’m going to get out to the track soon and get my actual MHR. I know it is higher than 178. I’ve had it higher than that at the boxing place. Also, figure out the chest heart rate strap I got for Christmas. Also, also… try to do all runs in the morning this week. Something always gets in the way when I wait.
